Cherries can be tasty for dogs to eat, but the sad news is that the flesh of the cherry can lead to your dog having upset stomach, even though cherry contain vitamin A, vitamin C, fiber and antioxidants, which are known to be superb for bernedoodle.

The drawback that comes with cherry is the fact that the cherry pit, stem and leaves all contain cyanide. This is considered to be on the toxic side for dogs if given in a large amount.

If your bernedoodle accidentally eaten a single cherry, you don’t necessarily have to worry because it might not be enough to cause any issues, but we don’t think it would be wise to take the risk. Apart from that, if your dog if your dog consume the pit, it can result in intestinal obstruction.

The reason for this is because the stems, pits and leaves of the cherries all contain cyanide, which is very well known to be toxic and can even result in your dog being poison if they consume a large amount.

If somehow your dog eat one or two cherries, you probably don’t have to worry because we don’t think the cyanide would be strong enough to cause any harm. Cherry pits are said to be the main culprit for dogs since it can cause intestinal obstruction. This is the most common problem you have to look out for when feeding your dogs cherries and it is a serious problem that can lead to health issues.

Because of the risk that comes with cherry, we don’t think it would be good to actually feed this fruit to your little friend. There are many different fruits out there that is capable of providing the same health benefits.

Are There Any Safe Cherries For Bernedoodles?

The thing is that there are many different cherries out there such as bing, rainier, black and maraschino. Even though maraschino doesn’t have any pit, they tend to contain a lot of sugar, which isn’t a good thing for dogs.

Generally speaking, you should only feed your dog cherry that is fresh from the tree. But before doing so, you’ll have to properly remove the stem, pit and leaves first. As you can see, that’s a lot of upfront work.

What to Do If Your Bernedoodles Eat a Whole Cherry?

If your dog eats a cherry without your approval, we don’t think you should panic. Eating a single cherry pit will unlikely cause any harm to your dog, but we think you should look out for symptoms of intestinal blockage which includes vomiting, decreased appetite, constipation and reduction in fecal production.

These symptoms may take some time to appear after your dog eat a cherry pit. Another thing you should know is that smaller size dogs are more prone to have intestinal blockage compared to the ones that is bigger in size.

If it’s a case where your dog have eaten a handful of cherry, then should keep an eye out for symptoms of cyanide poisoning. These symptoms includes labored breathing, bright red gums, and dilated pupils. If you notice any strange reaction from your dog, the best thing you can do is to consult your veterinarian. Your vet will have a better understanding and know the best action to take going forward.
