We all can testify on how tasty sausage can be. Though dogs are known to be omnivores, they still require a significant amount of protein in their diets in order for them to remain healthy. Yes maltipoos can definitely eat sausage but we only recommend that they do so in moderation and we don’t think you should use sausage as their main protein source either. However, feeding your dog a few pieces of sausage every now and then should be quite fine.
Even us humans tend to eat sausage in moderation due to the fact that it is processed meat that is known to be high in fat, saturated fat, salt and the list goes on. As you can see, eating sausage on a regular basis is not healthy for us, which is why we should only eat it every now and then.
Additional to this, the nutritional content of sausage is considered to be very limited. Though it is known to be mostly meat, they aren’t a good source of protein. Most brands on the market is said to contain less than 50% pork.
If it’s a case where you would like your furry friend to have a delicious treat that’s loaded with protein, then you should get them some lean meats like chicken, fish or even turkey. We think it is best if you stick to the whole meat because they tend to have greater nutrition, no added fat, salt or flavoring and the less processed these meats are, the better they can be for your dog.
Can Maltipoos Eat Flavored Sausage?
Whether you enjoy eating garlic sausage, salami, chorizo or any other flavored sausage, you should keep that to yourself and not share those food with your dogs.
It is best to keep in mind that flavored sausage is known to have the same issues as regular sausages such as high amount of salt and fat. Not only that, but you might find flavored sausage to contain ingredients that’s poisonous to dogs, including garlic, onions or nutmeg.
The fact that most dogs can be sensitive to seasoning and certain spices, giving them flavored sausage can eventually lead to upset stomach.
Is Sausage Bad For Maltipoos?
Let’s start by saying that sausage isn’t healthy for us humans to eat much less our dogs. But while we are able to fry a piece of sausage with bacon and eggs for breakfast, our dog should stay away from eating this.
You have dogs that is suffering from health issues that is affecting their heart, liver, kidney which means that they require a low-sodium diet just to remain healthy. If it’s a case where your dog is facing any of these health problems, then you shouldn’t feed them sausage.
As you can see, dogs are much smaller in size compare to us humans with much lower calorie needs, so giving them even a piece of sausage can definitely increase the recommended amount of calories and fat for the day.
